20. Three explanations for the way things are

This world is a bad place. If you doubt this assertion all you have to do is scan through the headlines of any major city daily newspaper for a week. You will have no doubt after that as you read of murders, rapes, child abuse, and other assorted crimes. On the international scene you will read about hurricanes, flooding, mass starvation, and genocide.

In reading about these issues there can be no doubt the world is a bad place. But where to place the blame is another issue entirely. And even if we knew for certain where to place the blame it wouldn’t do any good. In any event there is enough finger pointing to go around. I will now cover three different theories about why the world is the horrible place it is.

The first theory is our old friend original sin. The world was perfect in the Garden of Eden until Eve ate the forbidden fruit and after that the world went to hell in a hand basket. Since I covered original sin in chapter four I won’t go into it any further here except to say the theory makes no sense. It’s just another fairy tale for adults.

The second theory that I think has much more creditability can be found in David Hawkins book Truth vs. Falsehood. I wrote briefly about it in chapter 13, and here I will explain its reasoning behind the state of the world. The following information can be found in chapter 14, countries and politics. To briefly restate the major thesis of the book his scale of consciousness ranges from one to one thousand, with the higher numbers being better and two hundred and above being positive and below 200 negative. He calibrates the major countries of the world using his method. It is interesting to note the United States calibrates at 421, which is the highest. We are the best, and there are still many places in this country I wouldn’t want to live. Just so we know what we are discussing, here are the high ranking countries and their respective numbers. The United States is 421, Canada 415, Netherlands and Singapore 405, South Korea, Switzerland, Germany, and Hong Kong 400. The lowest ranking countries all rank below 100. They are Uganda at 40, Angola 50, Nigeria and Haiti at 55, Sudan, Congo, and Rwanda at 70, Oman, Libya, and Algeria at 90. Needless to say the lowest ranking countries are the worst of the third world hellholes. He also calibrates the different political systems. As expected dictatorships and fascism calibrate the lowest, at 135 and 125 respectively. Coincidentally those are the political systems the worst third world hellholes all live under. America lives under a democracy/republic, which calibrates at 410. That’s the basic introduction of David Hawkins explanation for the state of the world. I found his whole system of thought and his explanations very interesting and enjoyed reading his books very much.

I will now introduce my thoughts as to why the world is such a bad place. As often happens with many people my Spiritual Growth and Enlightenment happened during a bad time in my life. I won’t go into a long explanation as that statement will suffice for the purposes of this essay. It was during this time that I became a student of A Course in Miracles. For some reason I was drawn to lesson 129, paragraph 2, which reads:

It might be worth a little time to think once more about the value of this world. Perhaps you will concede there is no loss in letting go all thought of value here. The world you see is merciless indeed, unstable, cruel, unconcerned with you, quick to avenge and pitiless with hate. It gives but to rescind, and takes away all things that you have cherished for a while. No lasting love is found, for none is here. This is the world of time, where all things end.

For some reason I found that paragraph to be a source of comfort, and committed it to memory. I had memorized it for over a year before I gained new insight into it. In reading and memorizing it I always assumed the world was a bad place because it said so. But one day I was reading it and the words the world you see jumped out at me. That’s it, I thought. We process information through perception, not knowledge. The world we see is merciless, unstable, cruel, and all of the above. But that’s only the world we see through the eyes of perception. That’s not the real world. With that iinsight I no longer lived in that world. The last sentence, this is the world of time, where all things end, is a description of this world. Here’s the difference. The sentence, the world you see, is a statement of perception, not the way the world really is. The sentence, this is the world of time, where all things end, is a statement of fact. Once I understood that difference everything fell into place.

In closing this chapter I will make two final observations. First, the physical world we live in is not a bad place. It just is what it is. The second observation is we have no control over the external world anyway.
